Population:

  •  Total Palestinian population: 3,888,292, out of which 2,444,478 are in West Bank and 1,443,814 are in Gaza Strip

  •  Total Palestinian Child population: 2,121,132 out of which 1,282,847 are in the West Bank and 838,285 are in the Gaza Strip

  • 100,000 children are born every year

 General:

  • Poverty stands at 70% with West Bank being 66% and Gaza 79% ( Palestinians living on less than USD 2.7 per day for a family of four)

  • 31.1% are unemployed 27.2% in West Bank and 39.6% in the Gaza Strip

  • Salaries not paid since February 06 for 152,000 PA civil servants who support 1 million people (1/4 of population)

  • 165 million USD is required by PA each month out of which 60% is for salaries.

  • 536 closures which include checkpoints, partial checkpoints, road blocks, earth mounts and gates as of end June 2006 an increase by 12% from January 2006 (471 closures).

  • Palestinian deaths due to crisis, January 06- July 2006: 350, out of which 63 are children.

  • More than 84% of children killed this year are from Gaza. 53 out of 63 Palestinian children killed in 2006 are from the Gaza Strip

  • Palestinian injuries January – July 2006: 1,200

Health:

  • 3,000 children die every year from mainly preventable diseases

  • 2,600 children U5 die every year from preventable diseases out of which 2,000 neonatal deaths

  • 10% of children are stunted, 11% in Gaza and 9% in West Bank

 Education:

  • 144 schools disrupted during the scholastic year 2005/2006 resulting in the disruption of schooling for 64,712 students and 2470 teachers

  •  58.9% of young people aged 10-24 years of age say their first concern is education

 Child Protection and Adolescents

  • Some 360 Palestinian children are still in Israeli detention centers

  • 1/3 of the children have experienced violence and 1/5 have experienced violence in their home
