8. Al-Sa’ed, R. Wastewater Management for Small Communities in Palestine. Jerusalem: Palestinian Hydrology Group, 2000: 19pp.
This paper concentrates on the development of domestic wastewater treatment in rural Palestine. The issues discussed include historical development, key issues for wastewater treatment policies, problems and lessons learned by implementing wastewater management policies. The development of sanitation sector in rural communities has been assessed based on published data, personal contacts and project evaluation of some non-governmental organizations, donor agencies and reports and publications. The paper concludes that non-point pollution, caused by direct discharges from individual houses, small built-up housing projects, farms, etc., for which connection to a centralized sewage treatment facility is economically unfeasible, can be significantly minimized by small onsite treatment facilities.
